An 86-year-old Greenwood native, Margaret Mason turned to Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital after falling at home several times. Margaret is a mother of five children and has several grandchildren. Before her retirement, Margaret served her community by working at Greenwood Memorial Gardens for several years.
Margaret knew GRRH was the place to be, having been a patient at the rehabilitation hospital once before. “Each of my times here have been very enjoyable,” she stated. Weakness and imbalance caused the falls that led to Margaret’s most recent stay. “I just couldn’t continue to manage on my own at home, in my current state, and I knew I needed help. GRRH was my first choice, and I am glad I made it!” Margaret added that the staff at GRRH is “very friendly and professional.”
Having completed her inpatient rehab stay, Margaret is now able to walk much further, with improved balance and endurance. “I no longer have this huge fear that I am going to fall,” she said. “I am looking forward to getting back to my soaps on TV.”

James Crawford is a member of the local community, residing in Abbeville, South Carolina. James is married with two children. A former employee of Schneider Electric, James has enjoyed his retirement. “What I find the most relaxing since retirement is working in the yard,” he shared.
“I was completely blindsided when I was told I suffered a stroke,” James said.
After the stroke, James experienced significant left-sided weakness and was unable to walk. He knew he needed rehabilitation but wanted to take care in choosing the best facility. “My deciding factor in choosing Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital was the stroke certification,” James said, referring to GRRH’s disease-specific certification for stroke rehabilitation received from The Joint Commission. “Looking back, I’m glad I made the decision to come.”
Having completed his inpatient rehabilitation stay, James can now stand again and walk with a walker. Additionally, he’s regained much of his independence with daily activities. “My goal is to get back to the yard work I love,” James said. “It was a challenging but fruitful experience. The therapy and nursing staff are wonderful!”
“Working in textiles all my life, I have always been in pretty good shape. I never thought I would end up in a hospital.”
However, that’s what happened to John Massey, a 74-year-old gentleman from the Donald’s-Abbeville area. John underwent heart surgery due to complications and had an extended hospital stay. That extended hospitalization left John extremely weak.
“When it was time for me to leave the hospital, I knew that I wasn’t ready,” John recalled. “I had so much weakness in my legs and almost no endurance. I did not feel safe going home.”
John chose to admit to Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital for intensive inpatient therapy to regain his strength and independence.

To regain his function and independence, John needed medical rehabilitation. He chose Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital to help him overcome this challenge.
“I didn’t want to leave home, but I knew I couldn’t continue down my current path,” John shared. “I’m glad I decided to come.”
