Virgil Wall
Success Story
Seventy-six-year-old Virgil Wall from Greenwood, S.C., is a retired forester who enjoys cattle farming. One day, while out walking, he was struck by car. The accident left him with multiple injuries, including fractures in his face and both his legs, and a brain bleed.
After receiving emergency treatment at an acute care hospital, Virgil chose to continue his recovery at Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital (GRRH). “It was close to home, and my wife had heard great things about the staff and care here,” he says.
When Virgil arrived at GRRH, he was unable to walk or care for himself. He needed full assistance with getting in and out of bed, dressing, and other daily tasks. Under the guidance of the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team, he followed a personalized rehabilitation plan designed to rebuild his strength and mobility.
Virgil’s physical therapists focused on helping him regain strength, balance, and mobility. Using equipment like parallel bars and a sliding board, they helped him progress to walking again with a rolling walker and knee brace. The hospital’s occupational therapists helped Virgil relearn essential skills like dressing, bathing, and managing daily activities around the home.
After 71 days of intensive therapy, Virgil is now able to walk with a rolling walker and complete his activities of daily living independently. He’s excited to return home to his wife and his cattle farm.
