Clara Wolff

Success Story

Ninety-one-year-old Clara Wolff from Greenwood, S.C., enjoys shopping and keeping a tidy home. Recently, she fell and experienced radiating pain in her right hip, leaving her unable to walk. She was diagnosed with a right femoral neck fracture, which is a break in the thigh bone just below the hip joint.

After initial treatment at a local acute care hospital, Clara chose to receive specialized rehabilitative care at Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital (GRRH) because her son had previously been treated there. “They did such a great job with him that I knew this was the right place for me,” she says.

When Clara arrived at GRRH, she could only put a little weight on her leg. She needed assistance with mobility and transfers, like getting in and out of bed. She was only able to walk about 4 feet.

During her stay, Clara worked closely with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team, who developed a personalized treatment plan to maximize her recovery. She received intensive physical and occupational therapies to improve her bed mobility, balance, gait, and transfers.

“The therapists taught me great techniques during my transfer training,” Clara says. “I also received help with my daily activities including showering and toileting.”

After 35 days at GRRH, Clara now is able to walk with a rolling walker and complete activities of daily living with assistance. She’s excited to return home to her daily routines.
