Carlton Davis

Success Story

From Greenwood, SC, 76-year-old Carlton Davis is a former sheriff for Greenwood County who enjoys gardening and exercising at the gym. He has a wife, two sons, and seven grandchildren. Recently, after napping on the couch, he woke up with weakness on his right side and trouble keeping his balance. He was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a stroke and later experienced a second stroke while receiving care at the hospital.

After his family and friends researched rehabilitation facilities, Carlton chose Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital (GRRH) because of its reputation for excellent stroke care. GRRH is certified by The Joint Commission in Stroke Rehabilitation.

When Carlton arrived at GRRH, he was unable to stand, walk, or complete activities of daily living due to significant right-sided weakness. Determined to regain his independence, his goal was to return to a life as close to normal as possible. “I was completely independent prior to any of this,” he says.

During occupational therapy, Carlton focused on activities of daily living such as dressing and showering. In physical therapy, he worked on navigating steps, climbing stairs, sitting, standing, and walking. He also used Rise&Walk® innovative gait-training technology as part of his treatment. Rise&Walk® is a neurorehabilitation station that combines robotic-assisted gait training, seated activities, and a balance support zone.

“Therapy was top notch!” Carlton says. “The staff and therapy team were very supportive, caring, and empathetic to my needs. They were all very professional and went above and beyond to ensure I had a great stay.”

During his three weeks at GRRH, Carlton made significant progress. He now can complete daily tasks with modified independence and walk using a rolling walker.

“GRRH is a great organization from top to bottom!” Carlton says.
