Sally Kauffmann

Success Story

Sally Kauffman and her husband, Doug, have been residents of Greenwood, S.C., for nearly five decades. Recently, however, Sally was in Charleston, S.C. with a colleague when she suffered a traumatic stroke. The stroke left Sally with right-sided hemiparesis (weakness and inability to move the body) and expressive aphasia, making it hard for her to communicate.

“When I heard Sally had a stroke, I immediately knew that Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital (GRRH) is where I wanted her to go for therapy,” Doug says. “We know others who have been treated there, so we had a lot of faith in the therapy team.”

Doug says the team did not disappoint.

“As soon as we entered the hospital doors, we felt like part of a big family,” he says. “The therapy team even came to my home to provide guidance and safety tips to ensure that I can safely take care of my wife when we return home.”

Since coming to GRRH, Sally’s speech has improved dramatically, making communication more manageable. She also has regained enough strength in her right leg to stand with the help of a rolling walker, which makes her transfers much safer.

“My wife can sing again!” Doug says. “Choosing to come to GRRH was the best decision I could have made for us.”
